Statistics of BPR or ERD

Borderline Personality Disorder Facts

  • Borderline personality disorder is also known as emotional regulation disorder (ERD).¹
  • ERD is a debilitating biological disorder.
  • 2% of adults have this disorder.
  • 20% present in psychiatric hospitals.
  • 11% in outpatient clinics.
  • 69% to 75% exhibit self-destructive behaviors such as self-mutilation, chemical dependency, eating disorders and suicide attempts.
  • 8 - 10% die by suicide usually due to lack of impulse control over depression.
  • Successful suicide rate doubles with a history of self-destructive behaviors and suicide attempts.
  • 50% experience Clinical Depression
  • Approximately 25% of those with ERD also meet the criteria for post traumatic stress disorder.
  • Of Dual Diagnosed People, 50-67% have ERD.
  • Between 40% and 71% of ERD patients report having been sexually abused, usually by a non-caregiver.
  • Characteristics of ERD are described here in the DSM IV.
  • Most experts in this field agree that ERD is on the wrong axis code. Presently on Axis II. Should be Axis I.
  • Diagnosed more often in females - approximately 75%.
  • ERD has received very little attention and funding by our nation's health care system.
  • Most clinicians are either mis-educated or under-educated about ERD and appropriate treatment. Thus people continue to suffer.
  • Those who received standard community based inpatient and outpatient psychiatric treatment show this form of treatment to be marginally ineffective when measured 2-3 years later.
  • Treatable with medication initially and psychodynamic therapy complimented with dialectical behavior therapy (DBT). Therapy without proper medications is not recommended by many Drs. in this field.
  • Cause of ERD is unclear but it appears to be a combination of genetic and environmental factors. More research is needed.
  • Severe headaches and migraine appear to be more prevalent in patients with BPD than the general population.
  • ERD is highly stigmatized in the world.
  • Many clinicians refuse to treat ERD.
  • ERD is virtually unknown to the public.
  • Studies show inadequate regulation of serotonin, dopamine, and other neurotransmitters in those with ERD.
  • Discontinuation of medications are high at 50%.
  • On the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI), ERD patients do not show a common profile. Personality traits appear to be a combination of histrionic, narcissistic, and antisocial personality.
  • 22-35% of domestic violent perpetrators meet the criteria for ERD.
  • ERD (borderline personality disorder) can be extremely hard on families. Families need support.
  • Decreased glucose uptake in medial orbital frontal cortex may be associated with diminished regulation of impulsive behavior in BPD.²
  • There is no link between ERD and schizophrenia.³
  • Comorbid conditions in BPD may also affect the ability to act responsibly. 4

How to make someone happy with BPD

How To Make Someone With BPD Happy

Sorry to mislead you but it simply isn't possible. I'm not saying they can't be happy. I'm just saying you can't make them that way. You can make them happier. You can make them see a moment of happy. You can even help lead them to the light at the end of the tunnel. But truly, if they are unhappy they are probably depressed. And not the need a hug kind, but serious clinical depression. No amount of hugs can fix that. The good news is, meds can. So if the BPD in your life is miserable, talk to them about getting on meds, or adjusting the meds they are on if they are no longer working. Even then, true happiness has to come within themselves. You still can't make them happy.

Having trouble making them happy even with you? In a relationship where it's starting to feel one sided? Remember, they have to love themselves before they can truly love anyone else. And they have to be happy with themselves before they can truly be happy with anyone else.

Starting to feel like they will never be happy or that they don't want to be happy? Now is not the time to give up. They need your love and support now more than ever. See them through this, and you'll get to enjoy the end of the tunnel with them.

This all sounds increasingly sappy I know. I'm right there in the thick of this. I've found the end of my tunnel. It's in my sight, if not yet in my reach. I know I have my moments where I don't think I love my husband. Yet he's stood by me through a hell of a lot. As my end of tunnel nears, he's the one I'm clinging to. I'm enjoying him more now than ever before. So this sappy comes from experience.

There are 4 things everyone with BPD needs:
The right meds
A patient therapist
DBT classes
But most importantly : A solid trustworthy support system of friends and family.

Untreated bpd people:(

People with Borderline Personality Disorder, going untreated can work both ways. Yes, some of them refuse treatment. However, it also can be difficult to find a therapist willing to treat them.

From day one in therapy, many patients with BPD teach their therapists to feel hopeless about them. They use words and veiled threats such as “You can’t help me!” or “If I don’t get better I will kill myself. Just you wait.” These words can and will emotionally drain your average therapist. Meanwhile, even your most experienced therapist has trouble dealing with patients who self harm or make suicide attempts. They are indeed, only human with feelings. And working with people they can become emotionally involved whether they like it or not. They do care if a patient has a good or bad week. And they will hurt if the patient hurts themselves. Even worse, a successful suicide leaves them second guessing could they have done more? A self doubt only magnified by any and all possible litigation over the death. For no matter how well a therapist has done their job, the suicide will bring about legal questions.

On the other hand there is the BPD refusing treatment. The number one reason is denial. With this illness comes long periods of stability which can leave the patient feeling like they are just fine and no longer need any help. They may have rages, but along with these rages come altered memory. These memories can leave them convinced they were really the victim. With denial comes the refusal to take meds and the vicious cycle that follows. In denial they go off meds causing a relapse with them needing to go back on them. Then after a time they are able to slip back into denial and end the meds again, just causing another relapse. When the meds do their job, it’s as if there is no illness, which can cause the belief that it is cured verses just being well treated. Another reason for denial is the stigma that comes with Borderline Personality Disorder. With the limited information about it, many don’t know what it actually is. They hear the phrase and assume the worst about the patient. This gets worse in the work environment. It can be hard, though sometimes necessary to admit the illness to coworkers and bosses. One must remember, one has a cold, but you are BPD or bi-polar.

While there is limited need to go into depth about this, one might also consider the cost of weekly therapy and daily meds. The medical bills can rack up quickly. And with it being difficult to hold a steady job with this illness, the insurance isn’t always there.

So there are many reasons BPD can and does go untreated and as for now, while the general population goes uneducated, the general population is to blame.
